About this calculator
How deep should a raised bed be?
Twelve inches suits most vegetables; root crops and anything over a hard surface benefit from eighteen.
Is bagged or bulk soil better value?
Bulk, above about half a cubic yard, which is only two 4×8 beds at 12 inches. Bags cost several times more per cubic foot.
The formula
cubic yards = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27
