To apply 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft from a 24% product, spread 4.2 lb per 1,000 sq ft, 20.8 lb total, or 1 bags.

Rates are based on nitrogen, the first NPK number. Over-application burns turf and runs off into waterways, and many regions regulate application rates and timing.

Questions

About this calculator

What do the NPK numbers mean?

The percentages by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. A 24-0-6 bag is 24% nitrogen, so 4.2 lb of product delivers 1 lb of actual nitrogen.

How much nitrogen does a lawn need?

Typically 1 lb per 1,000 sq ft per application, and two to four applications a year depending on grass type and climate. A soil test beats guessing.

The formula

product per 1,000 sq ft = target nitrogen ÷ (nitrogen % ÷ 100)
