A 2,400.0 sq ft lawn needs about 14.4 lb of seed for a new lawn, costing roughly $93.60.

Overseeding uses about half the rate of a new lawn. Rates vary by species. Fine fescues and ryegrass need considerably more per thousand square feet than bluegrass.

Questions

About this calculator

When should I seed?

Early autumn is best for cool-season grasses: warm soil, cooler air and less weed competition. Late spring is second best; summer seeding usually fails without constant irrigation.

Can I use too much seed?

Yes. Over-seeded lawns produce crowded, weak seedlings that compete with each other and are more prone to disease.

The formula

seed (lb) = area ÷ 1,000 × seeding rate
