Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out what a trip costs in fuel, and what that comes to across a fleet over a year.

Your numbers

Miles per gallon, or litres per 100 km if you pick kilometres.
$
Per gallon, or per litre for metric.

Result

Cost per trip $9.00
Cost per week (fleet) $540
Cost per year (fleet) $28,080
Fuel used per trip 2.5 Gallons, or litres in metric
Each trip costs $9.00 in fuel. Across 3 vehicles doing 20 trips a week, that is $28,080 a year.

Fuel is only part of vehicle cost. Maintenance, tyres, insurance and depreciation typically add as much again, so use this for fuel budgeting rather than full vehicle cost.

Questions

About this calculator

How much is unbilled drive time really costing me?

Fuel is the visible part. Add the technician's burdened hourly cost for the time in the van and the true figure is usually several times the fuel alone, which is why routing by neighbourhood pays back quickly.

Should I use city or highway economy?

City, for service work. Short trips with cold starts and idling deliver considerably worse economy than the combined figure on the window sticker.

How do I enter metric?

Choose kilometres and enter economy as litres per 100 km, with fuel price per litre.

The formula

fuel used × price per unit = trip cost
