About this calculator
What gross margin should an HVAC service job hold?
Service and repair work generally carries a higher gross margin than equipment replacement, because parts make up less of the ticket. The important comparison is against your own break-even, not an industry rule of thumb.
How do I allocate truck and overhead per job?
Take total annual overhead, divide by billable hours across all techs to get an hourly overhead rate, then multiply by the hours this job takes. The HVAC labour rate calculator does that maths for you.
Should the tech's drive time count as labour?
Yes. Unbilled drive time is one of the largest hidden costs in HVAC, and leaving it out makes short-distance and long-distance jobs look identical when they are not.
