Your numbers

%
Used for the “X% of the whole” result below.

Result

First is this % of second 12.50%
That % of the second number 30 p% × whole
Difference between the two 175
Percentage difference 155.56% Relative to the average of the two
25 is 12.50% of 200, and 15% of 200 is 30.

Percentage difference is measured against the average of the two numbers, which is the symmetric definition. Percentage change from one value to another is a different calculation. Use the increase or decrease calculator for that.

Questions

About this calculator

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change has a direction: it measures movement from an original value to a new one, so the starting point matters. Percentage difference compares two values without either being 'first', so it divides by their average and is the same in both directions.

How do I calculate a percentage in my head?

Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then scale. For 15% of 240: 10% is 24, half of that is 12, so 15% is 36.

How do I remove a percentage that was added?

Divide, do not subtract. To strip 20% tax from a $120 total, divide by 1.20 to get $100. Subtracting 20% of $120 would wrongly give $96.

The formula

part ÷ whole × 100 = percentage
