About this calculator
How deep for a new lawn?
Four to six inches of decent topsoil over broken-up subsoil. Less than four and roots hit compacted ground in the first dry spell.
Why does the weight matter?
Because deliveries are often sold by the ton rather than the yard, and wet soil weighs considerably more than the same volume dry.
