You need about 1.6 cubic yards (1.3 tons), costing roughly $72.92 delivered.

Top dressing a lawn uses a quarter to a half inch; any more smothers the grass. Amending a bed before planting uses two to three inches dug in. Those are very different rates and using the bed rate on a lawn kills it.

Questions

About this calculator

How much compost for top dressing?

A quarter to a half inch, which is about one cubic yard per 650 to 1,300 square feet. The grass blades should still be visible afterwards.

Can I use too much?

Yes. Burying the crowns of the grass suffocates it, and heavy compost on clay can make drainage worse rather than better.

The formula

cubic yards = area x (depth / 12) / 27
