The first number in an NPK analysis is the percentage of nitrogen by weight, so a 40 lb bag of 24-0-6 contains 9.6 lb of nitrogen. Applying more than about one pound of nitrogen per thousand square feet at once burns the lawn and leaches into groundwater, and many jurisdictions regulate both the rate and the season.

What does 24-0-6 mean?

Percentages by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. A 40 lb bag of 24-0-6 holds 9.6 lb of nitrogen, no phosphorus and 2.4 lb of potassium.

How much nitrogen at once?

No more than about one pound per thousand square feet from a quick-release source. Slow-release products can go higher because they feed over weeks rather than days.

Is phosphorus restricted?

In many places, yes. Phosphorus runoff drives algae blooms and several states limit its use on established lawns. Check locally before buying a fertiliser containing it.
