Seeding rates differ sharply by species and roughly double between overseeding and a new lawn. Fine fescues and ryegrass need considerably more per thousand square feet than bluegrass, and sowing at the wrong rate wastes either seed or a season.

About this calculator
What is a typical seeding rate?
Around 5 to 8 lb per 1,000 square feet for a new bluegrass lawn and 8 to 10 for ryegrass or fescue. Overseeding an existing lawn uses roughly half those rates.
Is more seed better?
No. Sown too thickly the seedlings compete with each other and thin out anyway, and dense young grass is more prone to disease.
When should I sow?
Early autumn for cool-season grasses, late spring for warm-season. Sowing against the season is the usual reason a lawn fails to establish.
