HVAC SEER Savings Calculator

Compare the running cost of two SEER ratings and see what an efficiency upgrade saves each year.

Annual saving $307.20
Payback on the upgrade 7.2 years
Current annual running cost $691.20
New annual running cost $384
Going from 10 to 18 SEER saves $307.20 a year, paying back the extra cost in 7.2 years.

Savings scale inversely with SEER, which is a good approximation but assumes identical run hours and correct installation. A high-SEER system on leaky ducts will not deliver its rated efficiency.

Questions

About this calculator

Is a jump from 14 to 20 SEER worth it?

It cuts cooling energy by about 30%, but the payback depends on how many cooling hours you run and your electricity rate. In a hot climate it can be compelling; in a mild one it rarely is.

Does duct sealing matter more than SEER?

Often, yes. Leaky ducts can waste 20–30% of conditioned air regardless of the equipment's rating, and sealing them is far cheaper than the SEER upgrade.
