Gravel Calculator
Calculate gravel volume and tonnage for a driveway, path or compacted base.
Result
Gravel compacts by roughly 20% when rolled, so the loose volume you order exceeds the finished depth. The waste allowance here covers part of that, increase it for a properly compacted base.

About this calculator
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
Typically four inches of compacted base plus two to three inches of surface stone. Soft or clay subgrade needs more, and often a geotextile beneath.
How many tons in a cubic yard of gravel?
About 1.4 tons for crushed stone, varying with stone size and moisture. Suppliers usually sell by the ton while you calculate by volume, so convert before ordering.
The formula
cubic yards = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27
