About this calculator
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Give them a common denominator first. Multiplying the two denominators always works, even if it is not the lowest one. Then add the numerators and reduce.
Why does dividing flip the second fraction?
Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. So 1/2 ÷ 3/4 becomes 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3.
How do fractions help on site?
Imperial measurements are fractional. Adding 3/8" and 5/16" needs a common denominator of 16, giving 11/16": the kind of arithmetic that causes cut errors when rushed.
The formula
a/b + c/d = (ad + cb) ÷ bd, then reduce by the greatest common divisor
