Panels come in fixed widths, so the last one almost always needs cutting. Plan where that cut lands: a narrow panel looks much better at an inside corner or against the house than in the middle of the front boundary.

Questions

About this calculator

Can panels be cut narrower?

Most timber panels can, though it means rebuilding the end frame. Vinyl and metal panels often cannot be cut cleanly, so the run has to be planned around whole panels.

Where should the odd panel go?

Somewhere least visible, usually at a back corner. Starting from the most visible corner and working away from it puts the offcut where nobody looks.

The formula

panels = (length - gate widths) / panel width, rounded up
