About this calculator
Concrete or gravel in the hole?
Concrete is stronger and standard for most fences. Gravel drains better and lets a rotted post be replaced more easily, which is why some installers prefer it for timber in wet ground.
Do corner posts need to be different?
Yes. Corners and gate posts carry tension from two directions and should be larger, set deeper and often braced. Using line posts everywhere is the usual reason a fence leans at the corners first.
The formula
posts = length / spacing + 1; depth = height / 3, minimum 2 ft; concrete = hole volume less the post
