Questions

About this calculator

Where do I find my rate per kWh?

On your electricity bill. Divide the total by the kWh used to get the effective rate including standing charges and taxes, usually higher than the headline unit rate.

What uses the most electricity in a home?

Heating and cooling, then water heating, then laundry and cooking. Standby loads matter far less than most people assume.

The formula

cost = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × rate per kWh
