Your cost is $1,884, with the bride at $535 including the trial and $960 of party services. 7 people at 75 minutes each is 4.4 hours of work across 2 artists, so you have to start 5.9 hours before the ceremony.

Wedding pricing varies by region, season and day of the week by more than most couples expect, so treat the defaults as placeholders and replace them with quotes you have actually been given. A Saturday in peak season in a major metro is a different market from a Friday in the off season. The timing output is the reason to run this calculation rather than just adding up prices. Hair and makeup is the hard constraint on a wedding morning, and the arithmetic is unforgiving: a large party with one artist means starting before dawn, and that is how early start fees appear on an invoice. Adding a second artist costs money and halves the elapsed time, which is usually the right trade. The buffer before the ceremony matters too, because being ready at the last moment leaves nothing for photographs, dressing or the drive. Trials are counted separately because they are a real and commonly forgotten cost, and they are worth doing for the bride even when skipped for everyone else.

How the calculation works

Per-person rates for hair and makeup across everyone being serviced, plus trials, plus travel to the venue, plus any early start charge. The party size multiplies it and the trial is a separate cost that is worth having rather than skipping.

What moves the number

  • Number of people being serviced.
  • Whether hair and makeup are both included per person.
  • Trials, which are charged separately.
  • Travel and early start charges.

Where this one goes wrong

Time is the hidden constraint rather than the cost, because a single artist can only service so many people before the ceremony, and a large party either needs more artists or a start time earlier than anyone wants. Work backwards from the ceremony. The trial is also worth doing despite the extra cost, since it is the only chance to establish what the look will be when there is still time to change it.

Before you quote

  • Work the schedule backwards from the ceremony time.
  • Add artists rather than starting unreasonably early.
  • Book a trial rather than deciding on the day.

Questions

About this calculator

How many artists does a wedding party need?

Enough that the schedule works backwards from the ceremony without an unreasonable start time. One artist can only service so many people, and the alternative to a second artist is starting hours earlier than anyone wants to.

Is a trial worth the extra cost?

It is the only chance to establish the look while there is still time to change it, and it also confirms how products behave on the day. Skipping it saves a modest amount and risks the one thing that cannot be redone.

What charges come on top of the per-person rate?

Travel to the venue, early start charges and the trial. Each is reasonable and each is frequently left out of a first estimate, which is why asking for an all-in figure for the actual party and schedule is worth doing.

How useful was this calculator?

Not rated yet. Yours would be the first.

The formula

elapsed hours = people x minutes each / artists / 60; start time = elapsed hours + the buffer before the ceremony

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only bridal hair, this is what happens to your total cost. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
