Solar Inverter Quantity Calculator

How many inverters or microinverters a system needs, for string and module-level equipment.

Inverters 1
Before rounding 0.8
Material cost $1,650
Cost per kW $229.17
1 string inverter(s) to cover 6,000 W AC, about $1,650.

Module-level electronics cost more up front and are usually required by rapid-shutdown rules in many jurisdictions. They also handle partial shading far better, because one shaded panel no longer drags a whole string down. A string inverter is simpler and cheaper on an unshaded roof with a single plane.

About this calculator

String, micro or optimiser?

String for a simple unshaded roof on one plane. Microinverters or optimisers where there is shading, several roof planes or a rapid-shutdown requirement that string equipment cannot meet.

Which lasts longest?

String inverters typically carry 10 to 12 year warranties and are replaced once in a system's life. Microinverters carry 25 year warranties but there are dozens of them on a roof, so a failure means going back up.

The formula

string inverters = AC capacity needed / inverter rating; microinverters = one per panel
