About this calculator
Why can't I just subtract the rate from the total?
Because the tax was calculated on the smaller pre-tax figure. Taking 8.25% off a tax-inclusive total under-states the pre-tax amount. You must divide by 1.0825 instead.
Is labour taxable?
It depends entirely on the state and the type of work. Repair labour, new construction and materials are often treated differently, so confirm with your state's revenue department.
The formula
pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + rate), never total minus rate
