About this calculator

What is normal household pressure?

Between 40 and 60 PSI at the fixture. Above about 80 PSI most codes require a pressure-reducing valve, because high pressure wears out valves, hoses and water heaters.

Why is pressure poor upstairs?

Partly height, which costs about 0.43 PSI per foot, so a second floor loses four or five PSI before anything else. The rest is usually friction in undersized or scaled pipe.

Does pipe size change static pressure?

No. Static pressure is the same in a straw and a barrel at the same height. Pipe size affects pressure only once water is flowing.
