The client receives $30,585, 35.98% of the settlement. Negotiating the medical bills and lien down put $10,215 back in their pocket, which is often the most valuable work in the matter.

Business arithmetic for running a practice, not legal advice. Fee agreements, contingency limits, trust accounting and fee splitting are governed by the rules of professional conduct in your jurisdiction, and several of them are strict. Check the applicable rules before any of this affects a client agreement. This distributes a settlement figure you already have. It does not estimate what an injury claim is worth, and no calculator should: that depends on liability, the nature and permanence of the injury, jurisdiction, policy limits and the specific facts. Lien resolution involves ERISA, Medicare and Medicaid rules that differ fundamentally from ordinary medical bills and carry personal exposure if mishandled.

Questions

About this calculator

Can this tell me what my case is worth?

No, and deliberately so. Case value depends on liability, damages, insurance limits and jurisdiction, and any tool offering a number without those is guessing. This distributes a figure once it exists.

Why are bill reductions so significant?

Because they come entirely off the client's share. Reducing $24,000 of medical bills by a third returns $8,000 to the client, which on a mid-size settlement can exceed what a larger gross recovery would have netted.

Are all liens negotiable?

No. Statutory liens, ERISA plan claims and government interests each follow their own rules, and some have very limited room. Treating them as uniformly negotiable is a serious mistake.

The formula

client net = settlement - fee - costs - reduced medical bills - reduced liens
