Landscaping Gravel Calculator
Gravel for a path, bed or driveway base, in cubic yards and in tons.
Result
Gravel compacts, typically by 10% to 20% of its loose depth, so the waste allowance here is mostly compaction. Sold by the ton in most places, which is why the tonnage matters more than the volume.

About this calculator
How many tons in a yard of gravel?
Between 1.3 and 1.5 for most crushed stone, depending on size and moisture. Ask the supplier for their own figure, because it is what they will invoice against.
How deep for a gravel driveway?
Four to six inches over a prepared base, often in two layers with a coarser stone underneath. A single shallow layer sinks into the soil within a season.
The formula
cubic yards = area x (depth / 12) / 27
