About this calculator
What R-value do I need?
It depends on climate zone and location in the building. Attics commonly range from R-30 in mild climates to R-60 in cold ones. Check your local code, which sets the minimum.
Does compressing insulation matter?
Yes. Squeezing an R-19 batt into a smaller cavity reduces its actual R-value substantially. Use the batt sized for the cavity depth rather than forcing a thicker one in.
