How the calculation works

The difference between two dates in days, with the choice of whether both endpoints are counted. Exclusive counting gives the elapsed days between them; inclusive counting adds one and gives the number of days in the span, and which is correct depends entirely on the question.

What moves the number

  • Whether the count is inclusive or exclusive.
  • Leap years within the period.
  • Whether weekends or holidays should be excluded.
  • Time zones, where the dates originate in different ones.

Where this one goes wrong

A hire period, a notice period and a hotel stay are all counted differently, which means the off-by-one question is substantive rather than pedantic and the convention has to come from the context rather than the arithmetic. Establish which is meant. Business day counting is a separate question again, since excluding weekends and holidays depends on which holidays apply where, and that is jurisdictional rather than calendrical.

Before you quote

  • Establish whether the count should be inclusive or exclusive.
  • Specify which holidays apply for a business day count.
  • Watch time zones where dates come from different sources.

Questions

About this calculator

Should both dates be counted?

It depends on the question. Exclusive counting gives elapsed days; inclusive counting gives the number of days in the span. A hire period, a notice period and a hotel stay are each counted differently, so the context decides.

How are business days counted?

By excluding weekends and the holidays that apply, which is a jurisdictional question rather than a calendrical one. Holidays differ by country, state and sometimes industry, so a business day count needs its holiday list stated.

Do leap years affect the count?

They affect how a day count converts to years or months, not the day count itself. A period spanning a leap day contains one more day than the same calendar span in a non-leap year, which matters in interest and notice calculations.
