Column size and reinforcement come from the structural design. Cardboard tube forms also need bracing and a level base, and a tube that floats or shifts during the pour is a far more expensive problem than a quarter yard of extra concrete.

About this calculator

Why does a slightly wider tube need so much more concrete?

Because volume follows the square of the radius. A 12 inch tube takes about 0.79 cubic feet per foot of height; a 16 inch tube takes 1.4, nearly double for a third more diameter.

How deep do the footings go?

Below the frost line and onto soil that can carry the load. Both are set locally, and both matter more than the diameter.
