Window Tint Cost Calculator
Prices window film, which is priced by area and carries one risk worth checking first.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Time, the film and the call-out. Film is priced by area and the labour is mostly preparation: the glass has to be genuinely clean, since any particle under the film shows permanently, and cut-in around the edges takes care. Film types do different things and cost accordingly. Solar control film reduces heat gain and glare, low emissivity film improves the insulating performance a little, security film holds glass together when broken, and decorative film is about privacy and appearance rather than performance.
What moves the number
- Area, which is the basis of pricing, plus the number of separate panes since each has its own cut-in.
- Film type, as solar, low emissivity, security and decorative films differ substantially in cost.
- Access, because upper storey interior work still needs ladders and furniture moved.
- Glass type and condition, which determine whether film can safely be applied at all.
Where this one goes wrong
Applying film to the wrong glass can break it. Film absorbs solar energy and raises glass temperature, and on annealed glass, especially in large panes, partly shaded panes or panes with an existing edge chip, that added thermal stress can cause the glass to crack. Manufacturers publish compatibility guidance by glass type, thickness and film, and it is worth following rather than assuming. The second issue is warranty: applying film to a sealed insulating unit voids the glass warranty with many window manufacturers, because the thermal effect can stress the seal. Tell the customer both things before quoting, because a cracked pane or a voided warranty after the fact is your problem.
Before you quote
- Check film compatibility against the glass type and thickness.
- Look for existing edge chips, which concentrate thermal stress.
- Warn the customer if film would void the window manufacturer's warranty.

Questions
About this calculator
Can window film crack my glass?
It can. Film raises glass temperature by absorbing solar energy, and that added thermal stress can crack annealed glass, particularly large panes, partly shaded panes and any pane with an existing edge chip. Manufacturers publish compatibility guidance by glass type and film, which is worth following rather than assuming.
Does window film void my window warranty?
With many manufacturers, yes, on sealed insulating units, because the thermal effect can stress the edge seal. That does not mean film is a bad idea, but it is a trade the owner should make knowingly. Worth checking the specific warranty before the film goes on.
What kind of film should I use?
It depends what the problem is. Solar control film is for heat and glare, low emissivity film gives a modest insulating improvement, security film holds broken glass together, and decorative film is for privacy and appearance. They are not interchangeable, and the wrong one will disappoint on the thing you actually wanted fixed.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 16 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $92.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $4,200.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 16 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $92 |
| Parts and materials | $4,200 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $5,767 |
| Labour | $1,472 |
| Before tax | $5,767 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $5,767: $1,472 of labour, $4,200 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $46 | $5,031 |
| $69 | $5,399 |
| $92 example above | $5,767 |
| $138 | $6,503 |
| $184 | $7,239 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
