Prices glass rather than a whole window, which is usually the cheaper answer to a fogged pane.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Time, crew, the glass and the call-out. The distinction that makes this calculation useful is between replacing the insulated glass unit and replacing the window. A sealed unit that has failed shows condensation or haze between the panes, and in many windows that unit can be removed and a new one fitted into the existing sash and frame, which costs a fraction of a new window. Where the sash is a sealed assembly, or the frame or hardware has failed too, the glass-only route is not available and the comparison changes entirely.

What moves the number

  • Whether the sealed unit is replaceable in that sash, which varies by manufacturer and age.
  • Whether the glazing location requires tempered or laminated glass, which costs more and is made to order.
  • Size and weight, since large units need more handling and sometimes lifting equipment.
  • Any coating or gas fill being matched, because replacing one unit in a house of coated glass with plain glass is visible.

Where this one goes wrong

Check the location before ordering, because safety glazing is a code requirement in hazardous locations and tempered glass cannot be cut once made. Ordering annealed glass for an opening that needs tempered means the piece is wrong, non-returnable and delays the job. Tempered also has a lead time rather than being cut on the van. The other thing worth telling the customer is what glass replacement does not fix: a failed sealed unit restores clarity and insulating value, but it does not repair a rotten frame, worn hardware or a sash that no longer closes properly, and those may be the better reason to replace the window.

Before you quote

  • Confirm whether the location requires safety glazing before ordering.
  • Check the sash actually accepts a replacement sealed unit.
  • Match coatings and gas fill to the rest of the house where visible.

Questions

About this calculator

My window is fogged between the panes. Do I need a whole new window?

Often not. Fogging means the sealed unit has failed, and in many windows that unit can be replaced in the existing sash and frame for a fraction of a full window. Whether it can depends on the manufacturer and design. If the frame and hardware are sound, glass only is usually the sensible route.

Why does tempered glass cost more and take longer?

Because it is heat treated after cutting and cannot be cut or drilled afterwards, so every piece is made to order at the finished size. That adds both cost and lead time. It is required rather than optional in hazardous locations, so it is not an upgrade you can decline there.

Will replacing the glass fix a draughty window?

Only if the draught is coming through a failed sealed unit, which is unusual. Draughts more often come from worn weatherstripping, a sash that no longer closes tight, or an unsealed gap around the frame. Those are separate repairs, and diagnosing which one is at work matters before spending on glass.

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

About $5,767: $1,472 of labour, $4,200 of parts and a $95 call-out.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$46 $5,031
$69 $5,399
$92 example above $5,767
$138 $6,503
$184 $7,239

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
