Unit conversion
Weight Converter
Converts weight and mass, where the two are distinct quantities.
Result
Conversions use exact internationally defined factors where one exists, so results are precise to the digits shown.

Each unit multiplied by its factor relative to a base. Strictly these are mass units rather than weight, since weight is a force that depends on gravity, and the distinction is invisible on Earth's surface and real in engineering contexts where force units are used.
What moves the number
- The factor for each unit pair.
- Whether a ton is metric, short or long.
- Troy versus avoirdupois ounces for precious metals.
- Whether the context needs mass or force.
Where this one goes wrong
A ton is three different quantities depending on which is meant: a metric tonne, a US short ton and an imperial long ton all differ, and on a large shipment the difference is substantial. Establish which is intended. Troy ounces are the other trap, since precious metals are quoted in troy ounces which are heavier than the ordinary avoirdupois ounce, and confusing them misprices a transaction.
Before you quote
- Establish which ton is meant before converting.
- Use troy ounces for precious metals, not avoirdupois.
- Distinguish mass from force where the context is engineering.
Questions
About this calculator
How many kinds of ton are there?
Three in common use: the metric tonne, the US short ton and the imperial long ton, all different. On a large shipment the difference is substantial, which is why the type has to be established rather than assumed.
Is a troy ounce the same as an ounce?
No, a troy ounce is heavier than the ordinary avoirdupois ounce and is used for precious metals. Confusing the two misprices a transaction, and the difference is large enough that it is noticed immediately on any quantity.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter; weight is the force gravity exerts on it. The distinction is invisible on Earth's surface for everyday purposes and real in engineering, where force units are used rather than mass units.

How to use this calculator
- Value. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 150.
- From. Enter your own figure; the page starts at Pounds.
- To. Enter your own figure; the page starts at Kilograms.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to converted value, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Value | 150 |
| From | Pounds |
| To | Kilograms |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Converted value main result | 68.0389 |
| Conversion factor | 0.453592 |
150 Pounds equals 68.0389 Kilograms.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only value, this is what happens to converted value. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Value | Converted value |
|---|---|
| 75 | 34.0194 |
| 112.5 | 51.0291 |
| 150 example above | 68.0389 |
| 225 | 102.0583 |
| 300 | 136.0777 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
