Prices a treatment system, where the only honest starting point is a test result.

About $602.50: $387.50 of labour, $120 of parts and a $95 call-out.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Time, crew, equipment and the call-out. What this calculation cannot do is tell you which equipment, and that is the whole job. Each contaminant has its own treatment: hardness needs ion exchange, iron and manganese need oxidation and filtration, bacteria need disinfection, nitrate and arsenic need specific media or membranes, sediment needs mechanical filtration, and low pH needs neutralisation. A system is therefore a stack chosen from a test, in an order that matters, because putting the wrong stage first destroys the one behind it.

What moves the number

  • What the test actually found, since that determines every component.
  • The order of treatment stages, because sediment and hardness generally have to be dealt with before finer treatment.
  • Flow rate required, as a system sized for one bathroom will not serve a house at peak demand.
  • Recurring media, salt, cartridge and lamp replacement, which is a continuing cost the customer keeps paying.

Where this one goes wrong

Selling treatment before testing is the failure mode in this trade, and it cuts both ways: equipment the water did not need, and the real problem left untreated. Private wells are not covered by the regulations that apply to public water systems, so nobody has tested it unless the owner did. Be specific about what each stage treats and what it does not, particularly where a health based contaminant is present, because a customer who believes a softener or a sediment filter has made unsafe water safe has been left worse off than before. Where bacteria, nitrate or arsenic are found, treat that as the priority finding rather than as one line on a proposal.

Before you quote

  • Get a laboratory test before specifying anything.
  • Sequence the stages so earlier ones protect later ones.
  • State plainly what each stage treats and what it leaves untreated.

Questions

About this calculator

What water treatment do I need?

Whatever the test says, and nothing can be specified before it. Hardness, iron, bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, sediment and pH each need different treatment, and a system is a stack chosen from the result. Any recommendation made without a test is a guess about both the equipment and the problem.

Does the order of treatment stages matter?

A great deal. Sediment and hardness generally have to be handled before finer treatment, because feeding untreated water into a membrane or a specialised media bed will foul or destroy it. A correctly specified stack in the wrong order fails expensively.

Is my well water tested by anyone?

Not unless you have had it done. The regulations covering contaminants and monitoring apply to public water systems, and private wells sit outside them. That makes periodic testing the owner's responsibility, and it is the only way to know what is in the water.

Will a filter make unsafe water safe?

Only if it treats the specific thing making it unsafe. A sediment filter improves clarity and does nothing for bacteria or nitrate. A softener addresses hardness and nothing else. This is why matching treatment to the test result matters more than the quality of the equipment.

How to use this calculator

  1. Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 2.5 h.
  2. People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
  3. Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $155.
  4. Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $120.
  5. Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
  6. Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.

The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

About $602.50: $387.50 of labour, $120 of parts and a $95 call-out.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$78 $410
$116 $505
$155 example above $602.50
$233 $797.50
$310 $990

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
