About $602.50: $387.50 of labour, $120 of parts and a $95 call-out.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Time, travel and the call-out to collect the sample, with materials covering the laboratory analysis, which is usually the larger part. Testing is priced by panel rather than by visit, and the panels differ enormously. A basic bacterial and nitrate screen is inexpensive. Adding metals, arsenic, radon, volatile organics or pesticides each adds analysis cost, and a comprehensive panel is a multiple of the basic one. Collection technique matters as much as the panel chosen, since a sample taken or handled incorrectly produces a result that describes the sampling rather than the water.

What moves the number

  • Which analytes are included, as that is most of the cost.
  • Whether the laboratory is certified for drinking water analysis, which matters if the result has to be relied on.
  • Hold times and preservation, because bacterial samples in particular have short windows and need to reach the lab quickly.
  • Whether the reason is a real estate transaction, a new well or a specific symptom, since each suggests a different panel.

Where this one goes wrong

A clean basic test does not mean the water is safe, only that the things tested for were not found. Arsenic, radon, nitrate and lead are all colourless and tasteless, and none appear on a bacteria-only screen. Choose the panel against what is plausible locally, which is where regional knowledge and state guidance earn their keep. On collection, a bacterial sample is easy to contaminate and easy to invalidate by exceeding the hold time, so a positive result should usually be confirmed with a correctly taken resample before anyone spends money on treatment. Private wells are outside the regulations that cover public systems, so no monitoring happens unless the owner arranges it.

Before you quote

  • Choose the panel against contaminants plausible in your area, not just bacteria.
  • Use a laboratory certified for drinking water analysis.
  • Observe hold times, and confirm a positive bacterial result with a resample.

Questions

About this calculator

What should I test well water for?

Bacteria and nitrate at a minimum, and then whatever is plausible where you live, which commonly includes arsenic, lead, radon, iron, manganese, hardness and pH. State and local guidance on regional contaminants is genuinely useful here, because the risks are geological and vary by area.

How often should well water be tested?

Bacteria and nitrate annually is the usual recommendation, plus a broader panel periodically and any time the water changes in taste, smell or appearance, after work on the well, or after flooding. A well that tested clean years ago tells you very little about it today.

Why did my test come back positive for bacteria?

It can be the well, or it can be the sample. Bacterial samples are easy to contaminate at collection and are invalidated by exceeding the hold time. A positive is worth confirming with a carefully taken resample before treating, and if confirmed, the cause needs finding rather than only disinfecting.

Does a clean test mean the water is safe?

It means the things tested for were not found. Arsenic, radon, nitrate and lead are colourless and tasteless and appear on none of them unless specifically included. A basic screen is a useful start and not a clean bill of health.

How to use this calculator

  1. Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 2.5 h.
  2. People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
  3. Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $155.

The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

About $602.50: $387.50 of labour, $120 of parts and a $95 call-out.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$78 $410
$116 $505
$155 example above $602.50
$233 $797.50
$310 $990

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
