Unit conversion
Volume Converter
Converts volume, where a gallon means two different amounts.
Result
Conversions use exact internationally defined factors where one exists, so results are precise to the digits shown.
Get a Free Business AuditHow the calculation works
Volume units convert by the cube of the corresponding length factor, or by their own defined factors for the liquid measures. The complication is that a US gallon and an imperial gallon differ, with the imperial gallon about 1.2 times the US one, so a figure in gallons means different amounts on either side of the Atlantic.
What moves the number
- Whether gallons are US or imperial.
- Cubed factor for dimensional volume units.
- Whether the unit is a dry or liquid measure.
- Fluid ounces, which also differ between systems.
Where this one goes wrong
An imperial gallon is about twenty per cent larger than a US gallon, which means a quantity, a consumption figure or a price per gallon means materially different things depending on which is intended, and fuel economy figures in particular are not comparable across the two. Establish which gallon. Dry and liquid measures also differ for pints and quarts in the US system, which catches people converting agricultural or produce quantities.
Before you quote
- Establish whether gallons are US or imperial.
- Cube the length factor for dimensional volume.
- Check whether a pint or quart is a dry or liquid measure.
Questions
About this calculator
Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon?
No, the imperial gallon is about 1.2 times the US one. That makes quantities, consumption figures and prices per gallon materially different depending on which is meant, and fuel economy figures are not comparable across the two.
Do fluid ounces differ too?
Yes, the US and imperial fluid ounce are slightly different, which compounds with the gallon difference. For recipe quantities the gap is small enough to tolerate and for anything measured precisely it is not.
What are dry measures?
Separate units in the US system for pints, quarts and bushels used for dry goods, differing from the liquid measures of the same name. They catch people converting agricultural or produce quantities, where the wrong one is a meaningful error.

How to use this calculator
- Value. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 50.
- From. Enter your own figure; the page starts at US gallons.
- To. Enter your own figure; the page starts at Litres.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to converted value, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Value | 50 |
| From | US gallons |
| To | Litres |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Converted value main result | 189.2706 |
| Conversion factor | 3.7854 |
50 US gallons equals 189.2706 Litres.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only value, this is what happens to converted value. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Value | Converted value |
|---|---|
| 25 | 94.6353 |
| 37.5 | 141.9529 |
| 50 example above | 189.2706 |
| 75 | 283.9059 |
| 100 | 378.5412 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
