How the calculation works

Hours times crew times rate, plus materials and the call-out. Sheet vinyl comes in wide rolls, so a typical room has few or no seams, which is why it holds up in wet areas. The labour is subfloor preparation and accurate templating and cutting, since a sheet has to be cut to the room in one piece and a mistake means a new sheet rather than a new plank. Seams, where needed, are heat welded or chemically bonded and that is skilled work.

What moves the number

  • Subfloor smoothness, because sheet vinyl telegraphs every imperfection beneath it.
  • Room shape, since a complicated outline is slow to template and risky to cut.
  • Whether seams are needed, which adds skilled welding time.
  • Whether it is loose laid, perimeter fixed or fully adhered, which suits different rooms.

Where this one goes wrong

Sheet vinyl is thin and flexible, so it takes the shape of whatever is underneath: a nail head, a seam in the underlayment, a crumb of debris or a trowel ridge will show as a visible bump and eventually wear through at that point. Preparation therefore means smooth rather than merely flat, which is a higher standard than a plank floor needs, and usually means a proper underlayment or a skim rather than laying straight onto rough boards. It is the material's strength that seams are few, so in a bathroom or laundry it outperforms plank products, and that is worth saying when a customer assumes sheet vinyl is the cheap option rather than the right one.

Before you quote

  • Prepare the subfloor smooth, not just flat, since imperfections telegraph.
  • Template carefully, because a miscut sheet is a whole new sheet.
  • Choose the fixing method to suit the room and its moisture exposure.

Questions

About this calculator

Why does my vinyl floor show bumps?

Because sheet vinyl is thin and takes the shape of whatever is beneath it. A nail head, a ridge of adhesive, a joint in the underlayment or a piece of debris will telegraph through and eventually wear at that spot. Preparation for sheet vinyl has to be smooth rather than merely flat.

Is sheet vinyl better than vinyl plank in a bathroom?

Often, because a sheet has few or no seams, and seams are where water gets in. Plank products with a waterproof core perform well too, but in a small wet room a single sheet with a coved edge is hard to beat for keeping water off the subfloor.

Can sheet vinyl be repaired if it tears?

A patch is possible and a skilled installer can make it inconspicuous, particularly on a pattern, but it is rarely invisible. Since the material is relatively inexpensive and the labour is the bulk of the cost, replacement in a small room is sometimes the more sensible answer.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total

$56 $3,203
$74 example above $3,527
$111 $4,193

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
