A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Hours times crew times rate, plus materials and the call-out. Tile labour is slower than any plank product because each piece is set individually in mortar, levelled against its neighbours and then grouted as a second operation. Materials include the tile, the setting mortar, grout, and usually a backer board or uncoupling membrane. Large format tile is slower rather than faster despite covering more area, because flatness tolerance tightens as tile size grows and lippage between big tiles is very visible.

What moves the number

  • Substrate stiffness, since a floor that deflects will crack tile or grout regardless of workmanship.
  • Tile size and format, as large format needs a flatter substrate and more care.
  • Pattern, because diagonals, herringbone and mixed sizes add layout time and waste.
  • Whether waterproofing is required, which it is in showers and wet areas.

Where this one goes wrong

Deflection is what cracks tiled floors, and it is a structural question rather than a tiling one. Tile and mortar are brittle and do not tolerate a springy floor, so the industry specifies maximum deflection limits for the framing, with natural stone requiring a stiffer floor than ceramic. A joist span that feels only slightly bouncy underfoot can be enough to crack grout lines within a year, and no amount of good setting compensates. Assess the floor before quoting and be prepared to say it needs stiffening. Mortar coverage under the tile is the other thing that fails invisibly: voids under a tile lead to cracks and hollow spots, and the standards specify minimum coverage, higher for large format and wet areas. Movement joints are required and are routinely left out.

Before you quote

  • Assess floor deflection against the limit for the tile type before quoting.
  • Achieve the specified mortar coverage, higher for large format and wet areas.
  • Include movement joints at perimeters and at the specified intervals.
  • Waterproof properly in showers and wet areas rather than relying on the tile.

Questions

About this calculator

Why did my tile floor crack?

Most often because the floor beneath it flexes. Tile and mortar are brittle and cannot follow a deflecting subfloor, so a slightly bouncy floor cracks tiles or grout lines. Industry limits exist for allowable deflection, stricter for natural stone than ceramic, and meeting them is a structural job rather than a tiling one.

Is large format tile easier because there are fewer of them?

No, it is harder. Flatness tolerance gets tighter as tiles get bigger, because any unevenness shows as lippage between adjacent edges, and a large tile bridges dips that a small one follows. It also needs higher mortar coverage. Expect it to be slower per square foot, not faster.

Do tiled floors need movement joints?

Yes, at perimeters and at specified intervals across large areas, and they are frequently omitted. Tile assemblies expand and contract, and without somewhere to move that stress cracks the field or pushes tiles off the substrate. It is a specification requirement rather than a detail.

Is the tile itself waterproof enough for a shower?

No. Tile and grout are not a waterproof barrier, and a shower needs a proper waterproofing layer behind or beneath them. Relying on the tile is the reason shower leaks show up in ceilings below, and the repair is a rebuild rather than regrouting.

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$37 $2,861
$56 $3,203
$74 example above $3,527
$111 $4,193
$148 $4,859

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
