Solar Maintenance Calculator
Ongoing cost of owning solar: cleaning, inspection, monitoring and the inverter that will need replacing.
Result
Most payback calculations ignore maintenance entirely, which flatters the return. Cleaning matters far more in dusty or pollen-heavy areas than in places with regular rain, and panels on a low-pitched roof self-clean poorly. The inverter replacement is the item most often forgotten and the largest single cost after installation.

About this calculator
Do panels need cleaning?
It depends entirely on location. Regular rainfall on a pitched roof does most of the work; dust, agricultural areas and heavy pollen can cost several percent of production between cleans.
How long do inverters last?
String inverters typically 10 to 15 years, which is why a 25 year projection needs at least one replacement. Microinverters carry longer warranties but replacing one means roof access.
The formula
lifetime = annual maintenance x years + inverter replacements x replacement cost
