Annual saving $1,163

Your current rate per kWh $0.16
The bill falls to about $71.12, saving $96.88 a month or $1,163 a year. The fixed charge of $14 stays whatever the panels produce.

A bill never reaches zero while the meter is connected. Fixed charges, minimum bills and demand charges survive any amount of production, and some utilities add a separate charge for solar customers. Check your own tariff rather than assuming the bill scales with usage.

Questions

About this calculator

Why can the bill not go to zero?

Fixed connection and meter charges are billed for the service, not the energy. Many utilities also apply a minimum bill, so heavy producers still pay something every month.

What is self-consumption and why does it matter?

The share of your production you use as it is generated. It is worth the full retail rate; the rest is exported at whatever the utility credits, which is usually much less.

The formula

saving = self-used kWh x retail rate + exported kWh x export credit
