Septic & well
Septic Tank Cost Calculator
Prices a tank replacement, where the tank itself is often the cheaper half of the job.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Hours times crew times your rate gives labour, then the tank and fittings go in as materials and the call-out covers getting there. What makes a tank job different from the arithmetic is that the tank is a delivered item needing an excavator and usually a crane or boom truck to set, so the labour line has to cover equipment time and an operator, not just a technician with hand tools. Tank capacity is normally driven by bedroom count under local code rather than by occupancy, so a larger house needs a larger tank even if two people live there.
What moves the number
- Access for the excavator and the delivery truck, which decides whether this is a half day or two days.
- What is above the tank, since a driveway, patio or mature landscaping has to come up and go back.
- Tank material, because concrete is heavier and needs more lifting capacity while plastic and fibreglass need careful backfill and can float in a high water table.
- Whether risers and a filter are being added at the same time, which is cheap now and expensive later.
Where this one goes wrong
The tank is frequently not the problem. A system backing up usually fails at the outlet baffle, the effluent filter or the drainfield, and replacing a sound tank fixes none of those. Confirm the tank is actually cracked, collapsed or undersized before quoting a replacement, because a customer who pays for a new tank and still has sewage in the yard will be back. High groundwater is the other thing to check before you dig: a tank set in a wet hole needs anti-buoyancy measures, and a plastic tank without them can lift out of the ground. Permitting and inspection requirements are county or state level, so confirm what applies locally rather than assuming.
Before you quote
- Confirm the failure is the tank and not the baffle, filter or drainfield.
- Locate the tank and check access for both the excavator and the delivery truck.
- Check the permit and inspection requirements for your county before scheduling.

Questions
About this calculator
What size septic tank does a house need?
Local code normally sets it from the number of bedrooms rather than from how many people live there, on the reasoning that occupancy changes and bedrooms do not. That means adding a bedroom can require a larger tank. Check your county's table rather than sizing from current household size.
Concrete or plastic tank?
Concrete is heavier and lasts well but needs more lifting capacity to set and can be damaged by aggressive soils. Plastic and fibreglass are far easier to handle and install but need careful bedding and backfill and can float if the water table is high and they are not anchored. Site conditions decide it more than preference.
Does replacing the tank fix a backing up system?
Only if the tank is what failed. Backups are more often a blocked outlet baffle, a clogged effluent filter, a collapsed line or a saturated drainfield. Diagnose before replacing, because a new tank draining into a failed field will back up exactly the same way.

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 2.5 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $155.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $120.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 2.5 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $155 |
| Parts and materials | $120 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $602.50 |
| Labour | $387.50 |
| Before tax | $602.50 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $602.50: $387.50 of labour, $120 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $78 | $410 |
| $116 | $505 |
| $155 example above | $602.50 |
| $233 | $797.50 |
| $310 | $990 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
