Septic & well
Septic Repair Cost Calculator
Prices a repair, on a system where the difference between a cheap fix and an expensive one is which component failed.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

The arithmetic is a service call: time, crew, parts and the call-out. What the total actually depends on is the diagnosis, because septic repairs fall into two groups separated by roughly an order of magnitude. Replacing a baffle, a lid, an effluent filter, a pump or a section of collapsed line is a modest job with predictable parts. Restoring a failed drainfield means new trenches, new aggregate and a new permit, which is close to installing half a system. Quoting before establishing which group you are in is how a repair estimate ends up being wrong by a factor of ten.
What moves the number
- Which component failed, since a tank side repair and a field failure are entirely different jobs.
- Whether the field is genuinely failed or merely overloaded by a fixable upstream problem such as a leaking toilet or a broken filter.
- Access to the failed component and what has to be moved to reach it.
- Whether a repair to the field triggers a permit and inspection, which many jurisdictions treat as new work.
Where this one goes wrong
Effluent surfacing in the yard is not automatically a dead drainfield. A running toilet, a failed water softener cycling to drain, a leaking fixture or a blocked effluent filter can hydraulically overload a sound field and produce exactly the same symptom, and fixing the source can recover it. Check water use and the tank side thoroughly before condemning a field, because the customer is about to spend a great deal of money on the wrong thing otherwise. Where the field truly has failed, be plain about it: a field that has been saturated long enough to fail does not recover with additives, aeration treatments or pumping, and selling those as a fix is selling a delay.
Before you quote
- Rule out a hydraulic overload from a fixture leak or softener discharge before condemning the field.
- Check the baffles and effluent filter while the tank is open.
- Confirm whether the repair needs a permit in your jurisdiction.

Questions
About this calculator
Why do septic repair quotes vary so much?
Because two very different jobs share the name. A baffle, lid, filter, pump or line repair is modest and predictable. Restoring a failed drainfield is close to installing half a new system, with excavation, aggregate and usually a permit. The diagnosis, not the pricing, is what separates them.
There is sewage in the yard. Is my drainfield dead?
Not necessarily. A running toilet, a leaking fixture or a water softener discharging to the tank can overload a perfectly sound field and produce the same symptom, as can a blocked effluent filter. Those are worth eliminating first, because fixing one of them is a fraction of the cost of a new field.
Can a failed drainfield be restored without replacing it?
Once a field has genuinely failed through long term saturation and biomat buildup, it does not recover from additives, aeration or extra pumping. Those may briefly relieve symptoms. Where the failure was caused by an upstream overload that has been corrected, a field can sometimes recover with resting, which is a different situation worth identifying.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 2.5 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $155.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $120.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 2.5 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $155 |
| Parts and materials | $120 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $602.50 |
| Labour | $387.50 |
| Before tax | $602.50 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $602.50: $387.50 of labour, $120 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $78 | $410 |
| $116 | $505 |
| $155 example above | $602.50 |
| $233 | $797.50 |
| $310 | $990 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
