Septic & well
Septic Installation Cost Calculator
Prices the installation itself, where permits, inspections and weather control the schedule as much as the work does.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Labour, equipment and materials for putting the designed system in the ground. The design is assumed to exist already: the cost here is excavation, setting the tank, building the field to the approved layout, backfill and restoration. What separates this from a generic dig is that the work is inspected at stages, so the schedule includes waiting. An inspector has to see the open excavation or the distribution pipe before it is covered, and a crew that backfills before that visit may have to dig it out again, which is why the sequence matters more than the hours.
What moves the number
- Inspection hold points, since the crew cannot proceed past them and the wait is real time on the job.
- Excavation conditions, as rock, hardpan or running sand change a straightforward dig into machine time nobody quoted.
- Haul distance for imported sand or gravel, which on a mound or sand filter system is a large volume.
- Ground conditions on the day, because working saturated soil smears and compacts it and can ruin the very permeability the field depends on.
Where this one goes wrong
Working wet soil is the mistake that shows up as a failed system two years later rather than as a problem on the day. Driving equipment across the field area or trenching in saturated ground compacts and smears the soil structure, which destroys the permeability the design assumed, and no amount of correct pipe work compensates. Keep traffic off the field footprint and stop when the ground is too wet, even though that costs schedule. Excavation safety is the other non-negotiable: trench collapse is a leading cause of death in this kind of work and protective systems are a regulatory requirement, not a judgement call about how stable the soil looks.
Before you quote
- Schedule around inspection hold points rather than discovering them.
- Keep all traffic off the drainfield footprint, before and during installation.
- Stop work when the soil is too wet to work without smearing.
- Confirm trench protection is in place at required depths.

Questions
About this calculator
Why does installation take longer than the labour hours suggest?
Because the work is inspected in stages and the crew cannot cover anything until the inspector has seen it. Those hold points sit in the middle of the job, not at the end, so a system that is three days of work can take a week and a half of calendar.
Does it matter if it rains during installation?
A great deal. Working or driving on saturated soil compacts and smears it, which destroys the permeability the drainfield depends on, and the consequence appears later as a failing system rather than immediately. Stopping for weather is cheaper than the callback.
Can equipment drive over the drainfield area?
It should not, before, during or after. Compaction from machine traffic reduces the soil's ability to accept effluent, and the field is the most expensive part of the system to replace. Mark the footprint and route traffic around it from the first day on site.

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 2.5 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $155.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $120.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 2.5 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $155 |
| Parts and materials | $120 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $602.50 |
| Labour | $387.50 |
| Before tax | $602.50 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $602.50: $387.50 of labour, $120 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $78 | $410 |
| $116 | $505 |
| $155 example above | $602.50 |
| $233 | $797.50 |
| $310 | $990 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
