About $226: $96 of labour, $35 of parts and a $95 call-out.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Time, the call-out and any parts or repair. Safe work is priced on time and difficulty rather than as a flat job, because the range is enormous. A residential fire safe with a forgotten combination may be manipulated or bypassed in a short visit. A commercial burglary rated safe is built specifically to resist exactly what you are about to do, and opening it takes hours, specialist drilling with the right rig and chart, and often a repair afterwards to restore the rating. Quoting a safe blind is not possible, which is why the make, model and rating come before the price.

What moves the number

  • Make, model and burglary rating, which determine the method and the hours.
  • Whether the container can be opened non destructively or has to be drilled.
  • Whether the safe has relockers or hardplate, which are specifically there to defeat drilling.
  • Repair afterwards, since drilling a rated safe means restoring it or accepting a lower rating.

Where this one goes wrong

Verify ownership before touching a safe, thoroughly, and document it. This is the single highest risk job in the trade for exactly the obvious reason, and the checks are the job as much as the drilling is. Identification, evidence of ownership or lawful authority, and a record of both are the minimum; where there is a dispute, an estate, or any doubt about who is entitled to the contents, the answer is to stop and require documentation rather than to proceed. On technique, drilling a rated safe without the correct chart for that model risks hitting a relocker and turning a solvable job into a destroyed container, which is why model identification comes before the drill.

Before you quote

  • Verify and record ownership or lawful authority before starting.
  • Identify make and model and obtain the correct drill chart before drilling.
  • Quote the post-opening repair separately, since drilling affects the rating.

Questions

About this calculator

Will a locksmith open any safe for me?

Only after establishing that you are entitled to its contents, and expect that check to be thorough and documented. Identification and evidence of ownership or lawful authority are the minimum, and in a dispute or an estate matter a locksmith should require documentation rather than proceed. It is the most sensitive job in the trade.

Why can't a safe opening be quoted over the phone?

Because the range is enormous. A domestic fire safe may open in a short visit; a burglary rated commercial safe is engineered to resist exactly that work and can take hours of specialist drilling plus a repair. The make, model and rating are needed before any figure means anything.

Will the safe still work afterwards?

If it was opened non destructively, yes. If it was drilled, it needs repairing to restore the rating, and that is a separate cost. A rated safe with an unrepaired drill hole is no longer performing to its rating, which matters if it is insured on that basis.

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$60 $178
$90 $202
$120 example above $226
$180 $274
$240 $322

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
