Kitchen Countertop Cost Calculator
Prices countertops, where templating after the cabinets are set is what makes them fit.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Hours times crew times rate, plus materials and the call-out. Countertops are priced by area with additions for edge profile, cutouts for sinks and hobs, and any seams, and the material spans a wide range from laminate through engineered stone to natural stone. The sequence matters as much as the quantity: stone and engineered tops are templated from the installed cabinets, fabricated off site and then fitted, which means a gap of days between cabinets going in and the counter arriving, during which the kitchen has no working surface or sink.
What moves the number
- Material, which is the dominant cost and spans a very wide range.
- Edge profile and cutouts, which are priced as additions rather than included.
- Seams, which depend on slab size against the run and are both a cost and a visual issue.
- Whether the substrate and cabinets can carry the weight of a stone top.
Where this one goes wrong
Templating happens after the cabinets are installed and fixed, not from drawings, because a fabricated stone top has no tolerance for a cabinet that moved. That puts a gap in the schedule between cabinet installation and counter fitting, and the sink and taps cannot be connected during it, which clients need to know in advance rather than discover. Seam placement is worth discussing too: a long run exceeding slab size needs a seam, and where it falls is a visible decision rather than a technicality. Natural stone has variation between slabs, so seeing the actual slab rather than a sample matters for anything with strong figuring.
Before you quote
- Template from installed cabinets, never from drawings.
- Tell the client about the gap between cabinets and counters.
- Agree seam placement with the client rather than deciding on site.
- Confirm the cabinets will carry the weight of the chosen material.
Questions
About this calculator
Why can't countertops be ordered with the cabinets?
Because stone and engineered tops are templated from the cabinets once they are installed and fixed, so the fabrication is exact. A top made from drawings has no tolerance for a cabinet that ended up a few millimetres off. That is why there is a gap of days between cabinets and counters.
How long is the kitchen out of action?
From cabinet installation until the counter is fitted and the sink connected, which is typically a number of days rather than hours because of the templating and fabrication cycle. Planning for that period is better than assuming the kitchen is usable once the cabinets are in.
Can I avoid a seam in my countertop?
Only if the run fits within a single slab, which depends on the material's slab size and the layout. Where a seam is unavoidable, where it falls is a decision worth making with the client, since it is visible. Discussing it beforehand is better than placing it by convenience.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 160 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $88.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $11,000.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 160 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $88 |
| Parts and materials | $11,000 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $25,175 |
| Labour | $14,080 |
| Before tax | $25,175 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $25,175: $14,080 of labour, $11,000 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $44 | $18,135 |
| $66 | $21,655 |
| $88 example above | $25,175 |
| $132 | $32,215 |
| $176 | $39,255 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
