Pool Construction Cost Calculator
Prices a new pool, where the barrier requirements are not optional and the site decides a lot.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Hours times crew times rate, plus materials and the call-out, across excavation, shell, plumbing, equipment, decking and finishing. Construction type is the main fork. A gunite or shotcrete shell is formed on site and takes any shape, costing most and lasting longest. A vinyl liner pool uses a prefabricated wall system with a liner, costing least. A fibreglass shell is delivered as one piece, which is quick to install and limited to available shapes and to sites a crane can reach.
What moves the number
- Construction type, which is the dominant cost and schedule decision.
- Site access for excavators and, for fibreglass, a crane.
- Soil and groundwater conditions, which can require engineering.
- Barrier, decking, equipment and utility connections, which are substantial additions.
Where this one goes wrong
A barrier is a code requirement rather than a landscaping choice. Requirements typically include a minimum height, limits on openings a child could pass through, no exterior footholds, and gates that are self-closing and self-latching with the latch out of reach and swinging away from the pool. They exist because children drown in pools reached through inadequate fencing, and an inspection will check them. Drain covers are also regulated, with requirements aimed at preventing suction entrapment, which is a hazard that has killed children. Both belong in the budget from the start rather than being discovered at inspection.
Before you quote
- Budget the compliant barrier and gate hardware from the outset.
- Use compliant drain covers and anti-entrapment arrangements.
- Assess soil and groundwater before pricing the shell.
- Confirm site access for excavation and, if fibreglass, for a crane.

Questions
About this calculator
Does a new pool need a fence?
Yes, and it is a code requirement with specific dimensions: minimum height, limits on openings, no exterior footholds, and a self-closing self-latching gate with the latch out of a child's reach swinging away from the pool. It exists because children drown in pools reached through inadequate barriers.
Which pool construction type should I choose?
Gunite takes any shape, costs most and lasts longest. Vinyl liner is cheapest with a liner to replace periodically. Fibreglass installs fastest and is limited to available shapes and to sites a crane can reach. Site access and budget usually decide it more than preference.
What is suction entrapment and why do drain covers matter?
A suction outlet without a compliant cover can hold a person against it with enough force to drown them, and it has killed children. Drain cover standards and anti-entrapment arrangements exist for that reason and are a regulated part of pool construction rather than an optional safety extra.
What makes pool construction costs vary so much?
The site as much as the pool. Soil conditions, groundwater, access for machinery, how far the equipment and utilities have to run, and how much decking is included all move the number substantially. Two identical pools on different sites can differ by a large margin.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.2 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $48.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 1.2 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $95 |
| Parts and materials | $48 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $257 |
| Labour | $114 |
| Before tax | $257 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $257: $114 of labour, $48 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $48 | $200.60 |
| $71 | $228.20 |
| $95 example above | $257 |
| $143 | $314.60 |
| $190 | $371 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
What each figure means
- Hours on site (h)
- Measured in h, between 0 and 400, starting at 1.2 h.
- People needed
- A number, between 0 and 40, starting at 1.

- A money amount, starting at $95.
- Parts and materials ($)
- A money amount, starting at $48.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($)
- A money amount, starting at $95.
- Sales tax (%)
- Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
What the results tell you
| Result | What it is |
|---|---|
| Estimated total | The headline result. A money figure. |
| Labour | A money figure. |
