Landscaping Close Rate Calculator

Measure what share of quotes convert and what a few points are worth.

Close rate 40.0%
Revenue from quotes won $8,160
Revenue at the higher rate $9,180
Extra revenue per month $1,020
Value sitting in lost quotes $12,240
You close 40.0% of quotes. Lifting that by 5 points is worth $1,020 a month, and there is $12,240 a month sitting in quotes you did not win.

A close rate is only comparable against your own history. It moves with how you count a quote, with the mix of work and with how quickly you follow up, so the trend matters more than the number.

What moves the number

  • Speed to quote, particularly at the start of the season.
  • Whether the quote was given on site or sent later.
  • Whether the customer is comparing maintenance or a one-off project.

Where this one goes wrong

Blending maintenance and installation close rates. They convert very differently and on different timescales, and a combined figure describes neither.

Questions

About this calculator

Does quoting on site help?

For maintenance, considerably. A price given while standing in the garden converts far better than one emailed days later, because the customer is already engaged.

Why does spring matter so much?

Because maintenance customers choose their provider at the start of the season and stay. A quote that arrives late in spring is competing for a decision already made.

What should be tracked on a loss?

Price, timing or scope. In landscaping timing loses more work than price does, because the customer needed it done and someone else was available.

How useful was this calculator?

How to use this calculator

  1. Quotes given per month. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 60.
  2. Jobs won. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 24.
  3. Average job value ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $340.
  4. Improvement to test (%). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 5%.

The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to close rate, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

What comes out

ResultValue
Close rate main result40.0%
Revenue from quotes won$8,160
Revenue at the higher rate$9,180
Extra revenue per month$1,020
Value sitting in lost quotes$12,240

You close 40.0% of quotes. Lifting that by 5 points is worth $1,020 a month, and there is $12,240 a month sitting in quotes you did not win.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only average job value, this is what happens to close rate. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Average job value ($)Close rate
$170 40.0%
$255 40.0%
$340 example above 40.0%
$510 40.0%
$680 40.0%

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.

Seasonality is not in this

Coverage and material figures assume the area you enter. Slope, access for machinery, existing growth and the time of year all affect both quantity and labour, and none of them appear in a calculation like this.

Estimating is the easy part

The jobs you never hear about cost more than the ones you mis-measure. BDEVY builds the marketing, systems and automation that bring them in.
