Sales tax $0
About $226: $96 of labour, $35 of parts and a $95 call-out.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Time, the call-out and any parts. Like vehicle work this is priced on response, and the skill is opening the door without destroying the lock. Non destructive entry by picking or bypass leaves the cylinder working and costs nothing in parts. Drilling the cylinder is faster and always works, and it means the customer also buys a new lock and the labour to fit it. The difference in total cost is the reason a locksmith who can pick is worth calling, and the reason a quoted price should make clear which outcome it assumes.

What moves the number

  • Whether the lock can be opened non destructively, which depends on the lock and the operator.
  • Time of day and travel, since response is most of the pricing.
  • Lock type, as high security cylinders are deliberately resistant and take longer or need drilling.
  • Whether a replacement lock is needed afterwards, which is a second cost the customer should hear about upfront.

Where this one goes wrong

Verify that the caller is entitled to enter the property before opening it. Identification and some evidence of residence or ownership is the standard, and it is the obligation the licence exists to enforce; opening homes on request without it is an obvious hazard. Be straight about method and cost too, because drilling a cylinder on a call quoted as an opening, then charging for a replacement lock, is the complaint this trade is known for. Say which method you expect to use and what happens to the price if the lock has to be drilled. Where a door is a rated or exit assembly in a commercial building, what may be fitted afterwards is constrained.

Before you quote

  • Verify identity and entitlement to the property before opening.
  • State upfront whether the quote assumes non destructive entry.
  • Tell the customer the replacement cost before drilling, not after.

Questions

About this calculator

Will the locksmith have to drill my lock?

Not usually. Most residential locks can be opened non destructively by picking or bypass, which leaves the lock working and costs nothing in parts. Drilling is faster and always works, but it means buying and fitting a replacement lock as well, so it should be a last resort and you should be told first.

Will a locksmith let me into any house?

Not without evidence you are entitled to be there. Expect to show identification and something connecting you to the address. That check is a licensing and professional obligation, and its absence would make the trade an obvious tool for burglary.

Why is a lockout more expensive at night?

Because it is response priced rather than time priced. You are paying for somebody to be available and to travel at an inconvenient hour, and the opening itself is often quick. That is also why the call-out is a large share of the total on a short job.

The formula

total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

About $226: $96 of labour, $35 of parts and a $95 call-out.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$60 $178
$90 $202
$120 example above $226
$180 $274
$240 $322

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
