How the calculation works

Hours times crew times rate, plus parts and the call-out. Common window repairs are the sash balance or spring on a double hung, a failed lock or handle, worn weatherstripping, a cracked pane, a seized crank on a casement, and a rotten sill or sash on a timber window. Those are modest parts with reasonable access, and a repair is usually a fraction of a replacement window, which makes it worth doing on an otherwise sound frame.

What moves the number

  • Whether the frame is sound, since repairing a rotten frame is temporary.
  • Whether the building predates 1978, which brings lead-safe work requirements.
  • Part availability on older or unusual window systems.
  • Whether the glass needs to be safety glazing in that location.

Where this one goes wrong

In housing built before 1978, work that disturbs painted surfaces is subject to federal lead-safe requirements, including using a certified firm and specific work practices, and window work disturbs paint by its nature. That applies to repairs as well as replacement and it is not optional. On the technical side, probe the sill and lower sash before repairing a timber window, because repairing hardware on a frame that is rotting is money spent on something that will fail anyway. And check whether the location requires safety glazing before ordering glass, since tempered cannot be cut and has a lead time.

Before you quote

  • Confirm lead-safe certification and practices on pre-1978 housing.
  • Probe the sill and sash for rot before repairing hardware.
  • Check whether the location requires safety glazing before ordering glass.

Questions

About this calculator

Is repairing a window cheaper than replacing it?

Usually much cheaper, where the frame is sound. Balances, locks, handles, weatherstripping, cranks and single panes are all modest parts. It stops being worthwhile when the frame itself is rotting, because the hardware will outlast what it is fixed to.

Does window work in an old house need special precautions?

In housing built before 1978, yes. Federal lead-safe rules apply to work disturbing painted surfaces, requiring a certified firm and specific containment and cleanup practices, and window work disturbs paint inherently. It applies to repairs as well as replacements.

My double hung window will not stay up. What is it?

The sash balance or spring has failed, which is a common and inexpensive repair. The sash is counterbalanced, and when that fails the window drops. Replacing the balance restores it without touching the glass or the frame, and it is a fraction of the cost of a new window.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
