Drywall Repair Cost Calculator
Prices drywall repair, where the patch is quick and making it invisible is not.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Hours times crew times rate, plus materials and the call-out. Cutting out damage and fitting a patch is fast. The cost is in the finishing: taping, several coats of compound each needing to dry before the next, sanding, matching whatever texture is on the existing wall, and then priming and painting. That sequence means a small hole is usually two or three visits rather than one, because the compound cannot be rushed, and the finishing is what determines whether the repair is visible.
What moves the number
- Texture on the existing wall, which has to be matched and is the hardest part.
- Drying time between coats, which spreads a short job across days.
- Whether painting is included and whether the wall can be painted corner to corner.
- What caused the damage, since a water stain means finding the leak first.
Where this one goes wrong
Matching texture is the difficulty, and it is worth setting expectations rather than promising invisibility. Orange peel, knockdown and skip trowel finishes each need the right technique and the right consistency, and a patch that is flat where the wall is textured is obvious under side lighting however well it was feathered. Paint is the other half: touching up a patch rarely blends on an aged wall, because the surrounding paint has faded and the sheen differs, so painting the full wall corner to corner is usually the only way to make a repair disappear. Say so in the quote. If the damage is water, the leak comes first.
Before you quote
- Identify the existing texture and whether it can be matched.
- Allow drying time between coats rather than rushing the schedule.
- Quote painting the full wall, since a touch-up rarely blends.
- Find the water source before repairing water damage.
Questions
About this calculator
Why does a small drywall hole take several visits?
Because the compound has to dry between coats, and a decent finish needs several. Cutting and fitting the patch is quick; taping, coating, sanding and matching texture is the work, and none of it can be hurried without showing. A same-day repair is usually a visible one.
Will the repair be invisible?
On a flat untextured wall, usually. On a textured wall it depends on matching the texture, which is genuinely skilled and never perfect under side lighting. And paint rarely blends on an aged wall, so painting the full wall corner to corner is normally needed for the repair to disappear.
There is a water stain on my ceiling. Can it just be patched?
Not until the leak is found and fixed, or it will come back through the new work. A stain is evidence of active or recent water, and patching over it hides the symptom rather than the cause. Finding the source comes first, and it may not be directly above the stain.
The formula
total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 3 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $85.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $60.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 3 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $85 |
| Parts and materials | $60 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $410 |
| Labour | $255 |
| Before tax | $410 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $410: $255 of labour, $60 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $43 | $284 |
| $64 | $347 |
| $85 example above | $410 |
| $128 | $539 |
| $170 | $665 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
