How the calculation works

Time, rollers and the call-out. A sectional door has rollers on each hinge and at the top and bottom of each side, so the count depends on the door's height and number of sections. The job is straightforward on the intermediate rollers and requires care at the bottom bracket, which is under cable load. Roller type is the main variable: plain steel rollers are cheapest and noisiest, nylon rollers on sealed bearings are quieter and smoother, and the difference is genuinely noticeable on a door under a living space.

What moves the number

  • Number of rollers, which follows the door's sections and height.
  • Roller type, since nylon on sealed bearings costs more and runs much quieter.
  • Stem length and diameter, which have to match the hinges and track.
  • Whether hinges are also worn, as a worn hinge misaligns a new roller.

Where this one goes wrong

The bottom rollers sit in the bottom brackets, which are under full cable tension, and removing one of those with the spring wound is a known way to be injured. Relieve the tension properly or leave the bottom rollers to someone equipped for it. Beyond that, a noisy door is often more than rollers: worn hinges, dry bearings on the torsion shaft and a loose opener rail all contribute, and replacing rollers alone on a door where the hinges are worn gives a disappointing result. Check the hinges at the same time, since they are inexpensive and the labour is shared.

Before you quote

  • Relieve spring tension before touching the bottom brackets.
  • Match stem length and diameter to the existing hinges.
  • Check hinges and shaft bearings while the rollers are being done.

Questions

About this calculator

Will new rollers quieten my garage door?

Usually a lot, especially changing plain steel rollers for nylon ones on sealed bearings. But rollers are not the only noise source: worn hinges, dry shaft bearings and a loose opener rail all add to it, so checking those at the same time gives a much better result for little extra labour.

Can I change garage door rollers myself?

The intermediate ones are straightforward. The bottom rollers sit in brackets under full cable tension, and removing one of those with the springs wound is a serious injury risk. If the bottom rollers need doing, that part is worth handing to someone equipped to release the tension safely.

How many rollers does a garage door have?

It depends on the height and number of sections, since there are rollers at each hinge and at the top and bottom of each side. A typical sectional door has ten to twelve. They are inexpensive individually, which is why they are normally all replaced at once rather than one at a time.

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total

$94 $463
$125 example above $525
$188 $651

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
