Flooring
Flooring Cost Calculator
Prices a floor, where the subfloor you cannot see decides how much of the quote is real.
Result
A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

Hours times crew times rate, plus materials and the call-out. Area times a material rate is the easy part. The hours have to carry the preparation, which is where flooring jobs are won and lost: removing and disposing of the old floor, levelling or flattening the subfloor, testing concrete for moisture, and dealing with transitions, thresholds and trim. On a straightforward job prep is modest. On a floor that is out of level, over a slab that has never been tested, or with three layers of old covering stuck down, it can exceed the cost of the new material.
What moves the number
- Subfloor condition, since flattening and levelling is the least predictable cost in the job.
- What has to come up and how it was fixed, as glued-down material is far slower than floating.
- Whether the substrate is concrete, which brings moisture testing into the scope.
- Furniture, appliances and door removal, which are real hours and are often assumed away.
Where this one goes wrong
Do not quote a floor over a slab without establishing the moisture condition. Concrete releases moisture for a long time and continues to transmit it from the ground, and installing wood, laminate or a glued product over a slab above the manufacturer's limit causes cupping, adhesive failure and mould, none of which appear immediately. Standardised test methods exist for exactly this and the manufacturer's warranty normally depends on meeting a stated limit. The other honest conversation is flatness against level: most floors need flatness within a tolerance over a distance, and a floor can be noticeably out of level while being perfectly flat. Correcting level is a much bigger job than correcting flatness, and customers often mean one and say the other.
Before you quote
- Test concrete moisture against the flooring manufacturer's limit before quoting.
- Measure subfloor flatness against the product's tolerance, not by eye.
- State who moves furniture and appliances and who disposes of the old floor.

Questions
About this calculator
Why does subfloor preparation cost so much?
Because it is the part that determines whether the floor performs, and it is invisible when finished. Removing old glued-down material, flattening a subfloor to the product's tolerance and correcting moisture problems are all real work, and skipping them causes failures that appear months later.
Does concrete need testing before flooring?
Over a slab, yes, and the manufacturer's warranty usually depends on it. Concrete transmits moisture from the ground indefinitely, and installing wood, laminate or a glued product above the stated limit causes cupping, adhesive failure and mould. Standard test methods exist for measuring it properly.
Is my floor out of level or just uneven?
They are different problems. Flatness is local dips and humps, measured against a tolerance over a short distance, and it is what most flooring specifies. Level is whether the whole floor slopes. A floor can be badly out of level and perfectly flat, and correcting level is a far larger job.

total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

How to use this calculator
- Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 18 h.
- People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
- Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $74.
- Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $2,100.
- Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
- Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.
The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.
A worked example
These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.
What goes in
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hours on site | 18 h |
| People needed | 1 |
| Labour rate charged | $74 |
| Parts and materials | $2,100 |
| Call-out or diagnostic fee | $95 |
| Sales tax | 0% |
What comes out
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated total main result | $3,527 |
| Labour | $1,332 |
| Before tax | $3,527 |
| Sales tax | $0 |
About $3,527: $1,332 of labour, $2,100 of parts and a $95 call-out.
How sensitive the answer is
Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.
| Labour rate charged ($) | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| $37 | $2,861 |
| $56 | $3,203 |
| $74 example above | $3,527 |
| $111 | $4,193 |
| $148 | $4,859 |
Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
