A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Time, crew, the unit and the call-out. An entry door is usually a prehung unit, so the labour is the frame work, and the cost spread comes from the door itself. The three common materials behave differently rather than simply costing differently. Steel is the cheapest, holds its shape well and dents rather than rots, but conducts heat and shows damage permanently. Fibreglass resists rot and dents, insulates well and takes a wood-look finish, at a higher price. Wood looks best and is the only one that can be planed to fit, but it moves with moisture and needs a maintained finish and an overhang to survive.

What moves the number

  • Material, which sets both the price and the maintenance the owner is taking on.
  • Sidelights and transoms, which add glazed area, width and cost and bring safety glazing into play.
  • Whether there is an overhang, since a wood door in full weather exposure is a maintenance commitment.
  • Glazing and finish options, which on a fibreglass or steel unit can exceed the base door cost.

Where this one goes wrong

Sidelights are where the code requirement appears. Glazing within a set distance of a door edge is a hazardous location, so sidelight and door glass generally have to be tempered or laminated, and that is not optional. The maintenance conversation matters too: a wood door in direct sun and rain with no overhang will need refinishing on a cycle the owner may not expect, and a dark finish on a fibreglass or steel door in full sun can exceed the temperature the manufacturer warrants, which some warranties exclude. Where the door is a required exit, the hardware has to allow egress without a key regardless of what the customer wants for security.

Before you quote

  • Confirm sidelight and door glazing meets safety glazing requirements.
  • Check whether a dark finish in full sun is within the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Tell the owner what maintenance a wood door in that exposure will need.

Questions

About this calculator

Steel, fibreglass or wood for a front door?

Steel is cheapest and dimensionally stable but conducts heat and dents permanently. Fibreglass resists rot and dents, insulates well and imitates wood, at a higher price. Wood is the best looking and the only one that can be planed to fit, but it moves with moisture and needs a maintained finish and ideally an overhang.

Do sidelights need special glass?

Generally yes. Glazing within a set distance of a door edge counts as a hazardous location, so sidelights and glazed door panels normally have to be tempered or laminated. It is a code requirement rather than an upgrade, and the exact triggering distances come from the adopted code.

Can I paint a door a dark colour?

Check the manufacturer's warranty first. A dark finish in full sun can push surface temperatures above what some fibreglass and steel doors are warranted for, causing warping or finish failure, and several manufacturers exclude it explicitly. In shade or under an overhang it is usually not an issue.

How to use this calculator

  1. Hours on site (h). Enter your own figure; the page starts at 16 h.
  2. People needed. Enter your own figure; the page starts at 1.
  3. Labour rate charged ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $92.
  4. Parts and materials ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $4,200.
  5. Call-out or diagnostic fee ($). Enter your own figure; the page starts at $95.
  6. Sales tax (%). Leave at zero if you are quoting before tax.

The result updates as you type, so you can try a figure, see what it does to estimated total, and change it back. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere or saved.

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

About $5,767: $1,472 of labour, $4,200 of parts and a $95 call-out.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$46 $5,031
$69 $5,399
$92 example above $5,767
$138 $6,503
$184 $7,239

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
