Cost engine work where the size of the job is decided by what is found once it is apart.

Estimated total $572

About $572: $297 of labour, $180 of parts and a $95 call-out.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

What moves the number

  • Whether the repair is in-vehicle or requires removal, which dominates the labour.
  • Machine shop work, which is a third party cost and a schedule you do not control.
  • Gaskets, seals and fasteners that must be replaced rather than reused once disturbed.

Where this one goes wrong

Quoting a fixed price before the engine is opened. What is found inside routinely changes the job, and a fixed number given beforehand is a number you will be held to.

Questions

About this calculator

How should an engine job be quoted?

In stages. Price the strip and inspection, then price the repair once the condition is known. Customers accept a staged quote on an engine far more readily than a revised invoice.

Is a used or remanufactured engine ever the better option?

Frequently, particularly on an older vehicle where the repair cost approaches the vehicle's value. Present it as an option with its own warranty rather than dismissing it.

Why do engine jobs run over?

Because the scope is genuinely unknown until it is apart, and because machine shop turnaround is outside your control. Both should be reflected in the timeline you give the customer.

How useful was this calculator?

The formula

total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

About $572: $297 of labour, $180 of parts and a $95 call-out.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only labour rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Labour rate charged ($)Estimated total
$68 $424.60
$101 $497.20
$135 example above $572
$203 $721.60
$270 $869

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
