About $179: $78 of labour, $6 of parts and a $95 call-out.

A planning estimate, not a quote. Access, the age of the equipment, what is found once it is opened up and local labour rates all move the real figure, sometimes a long way.

How the calculation works

Groomer time for the specific dog at a burdened rate, plus product, plus the overhead that table time carries. The time varies by coat type, coat condition, temperament and age far more than by weight, which means a cost built from size alone misprices most of the book.

What moves the number

  • Coat type and whether it requires hand work or clipping.
  • Coat condition, particularly matting.
  • Temperament and age, which can double handling time.
  • Product and equipment wear.

Where this one goes wrong

A matted coat takes far longer than a maintained one and the work is harder on both the dog and the groomer, and the decision about how to handle it is a judgement for the groomer and the owner together rather than something a price list can settle. Price the actual time. Temperament is the other variable people underprice: a dog that cannot be handled safely takes two people or additional time, and absorbing that repeatedly is how a groomer ends up working at a loss on specific clients.

Before you quote

  • Price by coat type and condition, not by weight.
  • Charge for the additional time a difficult dog genuinely takes.
  • Assess coat condition before quoting, not after.

Questions

About this calculator

Why does grooming cost differ between dogs of the same size?

Coat type and condition. A dense double coat or a curly coat needing hand work takes far longer than a short smooth one, and a matted coat longer still. Size is a poor proxy for the work involved.

Why does a matted coat cost more?

It takes considerably longer and the work is harder on the dog and the groomer. How to handle it is a judgement for the groomer and owner together, and the cost reflects the time rather than being a penalty.

Should a difficult dog be charged more?

The additional time is real, and a groomer absorbing it repeatedly is working at a loss on those clients. Pricing for the time a dog actually takes, explained plainly, is fairer to everyone than a flat price that only works for easy dogs.

total = hours x people x rate + parts + call-out, then sales tax

A worked example

These are the figures the calculator opens with. Every number in the results column below is produced by the same calculation the page runs, so you can follow it through before putting your own figures in.

How sensitive the answer is

Holding everything else steady and changing only hourly rate charged, this is what happens to estimated total. It is worth knowing which of your inputs the answer actually hinges on, and which barely move it.

Hourly rate charged ($)Estimated total
$33 $140.60
$49 $159.80
$65 example above $179
$98 $218.60
$130 $257

Every other input is held at the example value while this one changes, which is not how a real job behaves. Treat it as a guide to which number matters most, not as five separate quotes.
